So what with my iBook never going to have video again I drove down to Southampton on Sunday and picked up a MacBook (John Lewis, a) had stock, b) give you a 2 year warranty 3) give you a free Apple wireless keyboard and mouse – Ebay!). Its nice enough and the screen is indeed shiny. Sadly its a different shape (well duh!) so doesn’t fit in my slip case or TimBuk2 bag anymore. Booted it up this lunchtime for the first time and was greeted by the spinning beach ball (not a good start) and went through the start up process (and once again it skipped the date and time page!). Thankfully even though my old iBook isn’t to well I did manage to headlessly boot it into firewire mode and thus have the new MacBook pull all the files off, so my data is saved. MacBook does get rather warm at the back left, by the power connector, but not to much warmer than my G3 iBook (or my work’s G4 iBook) to be honest. I left it downloading updates when I headed back from lunch, so it should be usable later. Overall, its seems nice, the keyboard is firmer but otherwise, its pretty much feels like a Mac… which is how it should be.
