So today I needed to use a Dell DAC4 “console” for the first time in anger. Its a simple enough thing, you SSH forward ports 443 and 5900 to your local machine, point the browser at https://localhost:whereever and off you go. This works fine… or did. You see, since I tested these things, Java 1.5/5 has come out, so my Mac and indeed work’s support windows laptop, both have the latest Java VM plugin things on. Despite using Applications>Utilities/Java/*/* and saying I waned to use 1.4.2 over 1.5, the Dell vKVM still wouldn’t load, saying my JVM was not supported. Eventually on the Windows box I removed all Java and manually installed 1.4.2_11 and it all worked – but why can I not make this work on a Mac? Damn Apple. It _should_ work but it doesn’t… anyone know?
